Fire opal stones are quite different from the opals that we normally come across. These stones were virtually unknown to the rest of the world until the Spanish reached Mexico and Central America and discovered them, although they had been prized by the Aztecs for hundreds of years. Prior to that, the European gemstone market was relied on a small supply of opals from Hungary, then in the late 19th century opals were imported from newly discovered beds in Australia.
