The Edwardian Period lasted from 1901 to around 1920 and coincided with the reign of King Edward VII (1901-1910).
Edward and his bride Alexandra of Denmark, brought a cosmopolitan elegance to fashion and jewellery, influenced by European style and Art Nouveau. When Alexandra first arrived on British soil in 1863 she was greeted by a frenzied crowd of 80,000. She was the Darling of the Edwardian era, the Diana of her day, and soon became a fashion icon. ‘Alix’ wore a choker to cover up a small scar and soon they were flying off the shelves. Her smile won the nation over, described by an admirer as the “the wonderful smile which ravished all in the days when she came a girl bride, and with its undying beauty to the end.”
Edward VII had an impact on Edwardian Architecture when he commissioned Admiralty Arch in memory of his Mother. Sir Aston Webb’s fabulous architecture is punctuated by the mould of a nose in the northern arch; a play on memorial conceived by a witty monarch.  Edwardian architecture was less elaborate than the High Victorian style. Architects where less concerned with concealing soot stains now people had general access to electricity; patterns were pared down and colours became lighter.  Another good example of Edwardian architecture can be found at City Hall in London. The exuberant architecture is testament to Edwardian attitude to life considering this riverside palace was their take on an office block.
Economic and social development led to increased social mobility despite the apparent rigour of the English social class system. Parts of society that until now had little influence became increasingly politicised. The National Union of Women’s Suffrage was founded by Millicent Fawcett as women fought for equality and the right to vote.

Belle Epoque jewellery included garlands, ribbons, bows and urns reflecting the frivolous mood of the French court at Versailles.

The invention of a new torch that reached high temperatures in 1903 allowed jewellers to fulfil the demand for all white pieces made in platinum and mounted with old-cut and rose-cut diamonds. Moonstones and pearls were chosen to compliment diamonds.

Dainty diamond designs looked like folds of festooned fabric. The advent of the use of platinum allowed elaborate pieces to move with fabric. Openwork earrings became increasingly popular.
